Heltonville is in the farm country of Southern Indiana. Nestled among the wooded hills of Lawrence County, it has only about three hundred people. But it looms large in the memory of Wendell Trogdon, who grew from childhood to young manhood there during the 1930s and 1940s.
It was a great place to grow up. Despite mechanization the soil was often worked in the old ways. You were close to nature and to the people around you, and church gatherings, trips to county-seat Bedford, and baseball and basketball games were magical to a child.
The magic comes through in these stories, an engaging sequel to the author's Those Were the Days and Those Were the Days: Through the Seasons. The magic comes through, too, in the warm, whimsical drawings of Gary Varvel.
Sit back and open these pages. Step back in time in the shoes
of a boy growing up in Southern Indiana.
