Life was not easy for men who entered adulthood during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Jobs were difficult to find, money was scarce and the road ahead was uncertain.
It was that way for Cladie "Gus" Bailey, an Indiana University graduate who spent much of the decade in search of a future. Just when he found the woman he would marry-and his niche as a teacher and basketball coach-fate again intervened. The nation called him to active duty as an Army reserve officer and soon he would be
fighting in the jungles of the South Pacific.
"Out Front" is a tribute to Cladie
"Gus" Bailey, and other young men of the difficult 1930s who went to war in the terrible 1940s in the defense of
freedom...and did not return. |
